Automation Systems Engineer/Technologist DCS

Position Profile

This role is for a junior to intermediate level DCS experienced candidate (with preference given to Honeywell Experion and TDC experience).

You will be based out of our Calgary office, but may spend up to 50% of your time on site to support Engineering, Commissioning and Planned Support Services within western Canada.

Candidate Accountabilities

Team Work

Work within teams of up to 6 individuals in the design and implementation of control systems.  Interface with vendors, EPCs and our end clients to effectively work through complex project design issues and interface points.

Must be a competent communicator and driven towards achieving project success.

System Design

Work with customer’s process, instrumentation and electrical engineers to define engineering work packages that detail system architecture, network communications and 3rd party interfaces. Work with the Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) resources to produce drawings.

System Configuration

Configure control strategies, shutdown keys and Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs). Develop Human-Machine Interface (HMI) graphics based on client’s defined Operator Interface standards.  Configure interfaces with third party products (PLCs, HMIs, OPC Clients, Historians).

Experience with Honeywell control systems.

Verification and Acceptance Testing

Develop and participate in Autopro’s internal Hardware and Software QA/QC testing programs. Support System Integration Functional Testing (SIFT).  

Plant Commissioning at Customer sites

Perform Loop checks and help to troubleshoot field instrumentation. Experience with Foundation Fieldbus and wireless technologies would be an asset.  Execute functionality testing of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) / Graphics checks.  Test 3rd party interfaces.

Provide support for integration with business systems (Plant Information / Manufacturing Execution / Maintenance Management / Asset Management Systems). Experience with setting up Functional Locations and development of Preventative Maintenance plans in SAP would be a benefit.

Troubleshooting all aspects of system functionality Honeywell Experion hardware and software. Act on the client’s behalf to interface with system vendor(s) for timely resolution of all defects and deficiencies.  


Provide high quality written documentation as per Autopro’s methodology and the client’s standards. Prepare engineering work packages including schedules and bills of materials.  Generate and manage sign off process for Management of Change, Controller Download and other change management documentation (MOC’s).   Use of Beyond Compliance MOC software a benefit.  Mastery of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Visio, MS Project) is essential.

Act as the Clients Representative

Provide technical support during system construction, commissioning and start-up activities.

Candidate Profile

  • B.Sc. in Electrical, Computer or Chemical Engineering (emphasis on Process Control an asset) or Instrumentation Engineering Technologist Diploma
