Automation Systems Lead - Alarm Management (Contractor or Employee)

Position Profile

The Alarm Management Specialist will be involved in leading and executing alarm management projects for various clients. Projects range from basic alarm rationalization projects to full alarm management projects covering all aspects of the alarm management lifecycle.  Often working directly with client engineering personnel or at site with the client operations personnel.  The position may also include other controls systems projects when the alarm management project load is less than full-time.

Position Accountabilities

Provide leadership in alarm management projects.

Provide expert level knowledge to clients on the industry best practises and standards with regards to alarm management processes and technology, and promoting alarm management as a component of an effective process safety culture.

Translate client requirements for alarm management projects into project proposals and project execution plans.

Work with client stakeholders to develop Alarm Management Philosophy and Alarm Specification documents.

Gathering and analyzing raw alarm data and generation of associated alarm performance reports to serve as a basis for determining if alarm performance targets are being met as well as identifying opportunities to improve alarm system performance.

Translate multiple forms of alarm information (control system exports, lists, P&ID drawings, etc.) provided by the client into an alarm database for the purposes of alarm rationalization, and carry out the associated information reconciliation and database clean-up.

Organize and facilitate alarm rationalization sessions with client teams.  Rationaliziaton may also include indentification of basic or complex state-based alarming or other advanced alarming strategies.

Translate the alarm rationalizaiton results into implementation plans, including detailed design of state-based alarming and other advanced alarming strategies.

Travel, as required, in order to preform and facilitate functions such as project scope meetings, philosophy development discussions, alarm rationalization meetings, and alarm implementation efforts.

Assist in the design and modifications of new and existing process control and instrumentation systems (as a secondary role, with travel to site as required).

Lead the development of Autopro’s Alarm Rationalization methodologies and procedures based on industry standards and best practices, and steward the ongoing continuous improvement of those procedures.

Faciliate the development of alarm management as a basic skill for all process controls resources within Autopro through training presentations and programs.

Provide leadership, mentorship and development of junior and intermediate engineers, technologists and designers.

Participate in industry alarm management conferences or other industry event to promote Autopro’s expertise in this area and keep abreast of current technologies and alarm management processes.

Understand client’s specific industry business drivers, risks, and organizational dynamics, and the associated implications on alarm management requirements.

Identify business development and sales opportunities as they relate to an industry sector or specific client.

Participate in the development of scope of work, cost estimates, schedule development, and key assumptions within business development proposals..

Perform other related duties as required and needed.

Candidate Profile

  • Strong communication skills including ability to confidently present to groups, ability to constructively influence others, and the ability to produce clear, concise written documentation.
  • Confident in leading a group in technical discussions and managing strong personalities within group discussion to ensure equitable representation and consideration of all opinions and perspectives.
  • Experience working in and around a Control Room environment, preferably in an operations or operations support role.
  • Technically proficient in the understanding of P&IDs, SD Keys, set-point lists, narratives, etc.
  • High level understanding of industrial continuous process facility process design, the associated operational considerations & constraints, and related control and safety shutdown strategies.
  • High level understanding of industrial continuous process facility process operating practices and procedures.
  • Experienced in alarm management highly desirable.
  • Experienced in using Alarm Management software such as SIL Alarm, PSS, Honeywell AMS, Logmate, or others highly desirable.
  • Human factors engineering experience and/or training, and training on situational awareness desirable.
  • Strong power-user level database skills and a disciplined, rigorous approach to ensuring and managing data integrity.
  • The ability to understand DCS and PLC logic, and some experience in control system design and programming is desirable.
  • Basic project management skills to manage scope, budget, schedule, etc.
  • A self starter able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to be travelling as much as every second week for several months in a row.Typically for Calgary based resources the travel will be ~ 20% to 30% of your time, and for resources from other geographic locations the travel requirements will be ~ 40% to 50% of your time. Intermediate or senior level P.Eng, PL (Eng) or P.Tech.(Eng) registered with APEGA, or Certified Engineering Technologist or Registered Engineering Technologist registered with ASET.
  • Ten or more years of experience in an industrial continuous process environment such as Oil & Gas, Chemical Processing, Pulp & Paper, Utilities, or Refining.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Canadian Citizen or Canadian Permanent Resident.
