Project Controller

Position Profile

Reporting to the Team Lead, the Project Controller will proactively identify project financial risks and develop risk responses that maximize opportunities and minimize exposure to both Autopro and the client. Working collaboratively with Project Managers and Project Schedulers, the Project Controller develops, maintains, and analyzes project financial plans and establishes performance metrics in support of effective and proactive control of project costs and forecasting.

Position Accountabilities

Cost Control Analysis and Reporting

  • Establish and maintain customer projects in the financial system from proposal to close-out including project schedule, budget setup, work breakdown structure, project financial controls, project kick-off and project close-out.

  • Update, maintain and analyze project expenditures, commitments and cost flow, in the financial system.

  • Monitor approved client funding and provide early warning to Project Managers of potential cost overruns.

  • Work with Project Managers in the creation and maintenance of the project work breakdown structure at every phase of the project.

  • Work with Project Managers and Project Leads to gather project progress information.

  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of project financial status.

  • Assist Project Managers in the generation of weekly and monthly project status reports including CPI, SPI forecasting and trending.

  • Assist Project Managers in the preparation of change notices to clients.

  • Assist Project Managers in the preparation of internal variance requests to level-up approvers.

  • Update and maintain bi-weekly project review documentation for and participate in internal project review meetings.

  • Actively contribute towards the project reporting governance, specifically ensuring complete and accurate data.

  • Ensure timely preparation, review and issue of customer invoices in accordance with the project billing cycle.

  • Monitor and escalate aging customer invoice balances.

  • Understand contractual agreements to ensure projects are compliant to client-specific requirements.

  • Perform timesheet and expense review, validation and correction.

  • Contribute to the improvement of best practices discovered as part of the execution of the project.

  • Makes decisions and recommendations relating to general policy and project governance issues using established guidelines, procedures or policies, within authorized limits.

  • Operates at a higher level of independence, engaging senior colleagues when required.

  • Reports on deviations throughout the life cycle of the project.

  • Liaises with Project Managers, internal and client personnel regarding project control activities.

  • Recommends alternatives and solutions to routine and somewhat complex problems.

  • Participate in the project kick-off/project close-out processes and meetings.

Candidate Profile

  • Relevant post-secondary education with 5+ years’ experience in project controls OR

  • 3+ years’ experience in project execution

  • Experience working in financial management systems, preferably Oracle ERP

  • Proven experience using Earned Value Methodology in monitoring and controlling projects

  • MS Project or Primavera experience is an asset

  • PMP or CAPM designation an asset.
