Senior and/or Intermediate Telecom Engineer/Technologist - Contract

Position Profile

Reporting to the Calgary Operations Manager, the Telecommunications Engineer/Technologist will be involved in engineering and project activities associated with telecommunication systems for Autopro clients.  Our clients span several industries including Oil and Gas (upstream and midstream), Pulp and Paper, Utilities, and Mining.

Candidate Accountabilities

  • Scoping, estimating, planning and designing Telecom system designs for our transmission line and substation projects
  • Developing documents, schematics, and diagrams for utility-type Telecom systems as well as project scope, proposals, estimates, and budgets
  • Creating bill of materials for all Telecom equipment and hardware, ordering materials through procurement, and coordinating construction activities
  • Preparing and reviewing engineering documents, specifications, as well as inspection and testing procedures
  • Writing and planning project scope(s), staging plans, test plans, proposals, estimates, schedules, and budgets
  • Coordinating, staging and planning installation and commissioning with utilities and subcontractors
  • Responding to information requests from site and completing project documentation including as-builts, calculations and returning the data to the client
  • Traveling to site and liaising with internal groups and external contractors and clients
  • Enhancing and maintaining relationships with internal groups as well as external contractors and clients
  • Leading projects from conception through construction and commissioning, including mentoring junior engineers and designers

Candidate Profile

  • Electrical Engineering Degree or Technologist equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • For the senior position 10+ years of Telecom experience, for the intermediate position 7+ years of experience.
  • Proven knowledge of fiber optic system design, RF radio design, TDM, Microwave radio, Ethernet layer 2 and 3 protocols, TCP/IP and SCADA.
  • Experience with radio path studies
  • Experience with ultra-high frequency (UHF) and very-high frequency (VHF) mobiles, portables, and repeaters in small to large systems with associated consoles and interfaces to other communication systems; spread spectrum radio systems (often in a data gathering application) and interfaces to backbone communication systems; microwave systems for application in long-haul and/or high-capacity applications; satellite systems, including Inmarsat and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) systems; and associated systems such as operator positions, voice recording systems
  • Experience in obtaining radio frequency and tower licensing from Innovation, Science, and Economic Development (ISED) Canada (formerly Industry Canada), Nav Canada, municipalities, etc.
  • Working experience with communication systems in industrial environments, including Microwave Radio, Fibre Optics, Teleprotection, and cellular network.
