Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer Lead

Position Profile

The Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer Lead will be involved in numerous leadership and technical oversight activities associated with industrial control systems, and low to medium voltage power distribution design.  The successful candidate will be a strong leader, with exceptional communication skills, be technically well founded in depth and breadth of knowledge, and have a strong business sense.

This position is intended for a resident of Fort McMurray and area only.

Position Accountabilities

Lead and provide technical direction in the design of electrical power distribution systems in petrochemical, oil & gas, chemical, or oil sands facilities. Plant systems include Low to Medium voltage systems, switching equipment, transformers and protection/control, as well as motor control, plant lighting, and grounding.

Lead and provide technical direction in the design drawings for construction of the physical components of systems including, but not limited to the following:

  • DCS/PLC/RTU/SIS hardware design
  • Control panel layout & design
  • Low voltage power distribution systems
  • I/O wiring
  • Loop drawings
  • UPS design
  • Control console design
  • Instrumentation design

Prepare engineering, construction and equipment cost estimates for the systems listed above.
Prepare technical reports and Client correspondences/presentations.
Review and prepare detailed specifications and contract documents for procurement of major electrical equipment as well as construction document packages.
Assist in the preparation of the technical portions of Procurement documents (RFQs, POs), and review equipment tenders and vendor documents.
Assist in the coordination of project activities.
Visits to project sites and other design offices for project related activities as required, including commissioning and startup support. (Assume up to 30% travel required.)
Project Leader and supervision of Engineers, Technologists, and Technical Staff.
Project budget responsibilities.
Area Classification studies including fugitive emissions calculations.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and development to junior & intermediate engineers, technologists and designers.

Asset but not required:
Program and lead the programming of teams of junior/intermediate resources responsible for the development of various control system platforms, such as PLC (e.g., Rockwell Automation, Modicon, Siemens), DCS (e.g., Honeywell Experion, ABB 800xA, Emerson DeltaV, Siemens-Moore), and SCADA/HMI (e.g. Wonderware, Siemens, Rockwell Automation, Citect), and RTU (e.g., Fisher, Bristol Babcock, SCADAPack).

Candidate Profile

  • B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineer or P.Tech.(Eng.), registered with APEGGA, with 10+ years’ experience
  • Broad and deep experience in DCS/PLC/RTU/SIS hardware design, Control panel layout & design, UPS design, Control console design, Low voltage power distribution systems, I/O wiring, Loop drawings
  • Experience with developing construction work packages
  • Experience in leading/managing projects
  • Experience in coordinating electrical design team activities
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Extensive knowledge of the CEC
  • Experience leading junior & intermediate engineers, technologists and designers
  • Solid understanding of the industrial automation business
  • Canadian Citizen or Canadian Permanent Resident
