DCS Specialist - Honeywell Experion with Gas Processing Process Expertise

Position Profile

This role is for a Honeywell Experion DCS specialist, with a deep understanding of gas processing technologies. This position will be assigned to our Engineering and Technology team for deployment on projects based in Calgary and implemented throughout western Canada.  As needed, field commissioning and start-up campaigns, including camp stay, will be required. This role also includes Engineering, Commissioning and Planned Support Services at Calgary based EPC offices, and close collaboration with our end clients.

Position Accountabilities

System Design

Work with end client’s process and electrical engineers to define engineering work packages that detail system architecture, network communications, 3rd party interfaces, and control and marshalling cabinets Work with the Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) team to produce drawings.  Development of process control narratives.  Integration of PLC, RTU and other systems within the overall control system.

System Configuration

Configure control strategies, shutdown keys and Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs); Develop Human-Machine Interface (HMI) graphics based on client’s defined Operator Interface standards; Configure interfaces with third party products (PLCs, HMIs, OPC Clients, Historians).

Verification and Acceptance Testing

Develop and participate with internal Hardware and Software QA/QC testing programs; Support System Integration Functional Testing (SIFT); Lead clients in vendor Hardware and Software Acceptance Testing; Participates in PSSR processes.

Plant Commissioning - Multiple Customer Sites

Perform Loop checks and troubleshoot field instrumentation. Experience with Foundation Fieldbus and wireless technologies would be an asset; Execute functionality testing of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Graphics checks; Test 3rd party interfaces.

Troubleshooting all aspects of system functionality of Honeywell Experion hardware and software; Act on behalf of the end client to interface with system vendor(s) for timely resolution of all defects and deficiencies.


Provide high quality written documentation; Prepare engineering work packages including schedules and bills of materials; Participate in the procurement process and Prepare Purchase Requisitions; Generate and manage sign off process for Management of Change, Controller Download and other change management documentation (MOC’s); Use of Beyond Compliance MOC software a benefit; Mastery of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Visio, MS Project) is essential.

Act as the Clients Representative

Lead system support initiatives, acting as the end client’s representative, for software and hardware upgrades, integration to other systems, migrations, optimization and system expansion; Provide technical support during system shutdown and start-up activities.

Candidate Profile

  • B.Sc. in Electrical, Computer or Chemical Engineering (emphasis on Process Control an asset) or Instrumentation Engineering Technologist Diploma
  • 5 – 10 years experience with Honeywell and Honeywell Experion platforms
  • 15+ years experience design and configuration of DCS platforms
  • Previous experience with an EPC as a Controls Team Lead or Interface Manager.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proven customer focused practices
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License
