The Challenge

The client, a chemical manufacturing and handling company, need to replace their existing caustic evaporation system as the existing system was failing due to age and corrosion. Nondestructive testing and inspection in 2010 revealed an estimated 5-7 years remaining lifespan.

The objective of the Caustic Modernization project was to replace the existing caustic evaporation system with an all new system, in order to allow the decommissioning, and eventual removal of the existing evaporation equipment. The primary objectives were:

  • To provide a new Caustic Evaporation system, with the ability to meet the current and specified increased future production rates.
  • To achieve considerably lower operational and maintenance costs than the existing arrangement.

The existing (and now obsolete) Cell Renewal Shop was to be demolished and the new Caustic Evaporation system be installed in the same location.

Autopro's Role

Autopro's scope included providing the EI&C portion of the feasibility study and preliminary engineering, detailed EI&C engineering, and construction inspections required for:

  • The electrical infrastructure required for the new caustic plant
  • DCS infrastructure improvement and to meet the process control needs of new caustic plant
  • New MCC room and removal/relocation of existing electrical equipment in CRS area required during April shutdown
  • Electrical and control system improvements for the loading areas

Success Criteria

The project was completed on budget and on schedule.
