The Challenge

The client operates an industrial gas processing facility located in Southern Alberta. The plant was originally commissioned in 1986 and includes 95 mmscf/d of sour gas processing capacity (18-35%) and an additional 45 mmscf/d of sweet gas processing capacity. In addition, facility up-time has exceeded 99% with two days or less of downtime per year. The plant was originally installed with a DCS that was state-of-the-art for the time period; however, over the years, it has become increasingly difficult to find spare equipment to replace existing equipment and due to expansion of the facility, the system also has reached capacity.

In order to improve the operability of the facility and to leverage current technology, the control system was upgraded to a DeltaV control system, including the implementation of FOUNDATION Fieldbus technology. This enabled the plant to take advantage of technologies such as asset management and advanced process control to improve the overall profitability of the plant.

Autopro’s Role

As the site’s preferred automation systems consultant, Autopro was initially tasked with the responsibility of completing a control system study, generating a RFP, and completing the evaluations, which ultimately led to the selection of a successful control system vendor.

During the execution of this project, virtually every process area in the facility was affected. Autopro’s responsibilities include overall project management, electrical and instrumentation detailed engineering, procurement support and materials management, software development and implementation, controls checkout and commissioning, operations training, and start-up support.

Success Criteria

The project was completed on time with no additional downtime beyond the schedule plant outage.
