The Challenge

The client operates the largest single line market kraft, bleached kraft pulp mill in North America. The mill was originally brought into production in 1993 and produces approximately 650,000 tonnes of bleached kraft pulp per year. In 2009, to effectively capitalize on business opportunities provided by government “Green Transformation Incentives”, the client conducted a competitive evaluation to identify and engage a business alliance partner as their primary automation engineering services provider for the asset. The project involved the installation of a 32MW steam turbine generator by Mitsubishi.

Autopro's Role

Autopro provided full scope of project management and engineering services for the new steam turbine generator control systems and successfully ensured synchronization with the Alberta electrical grid. Autopro’s scope also included:

  • Electrical engineering design
  • Installation, testing, and troubleshooting support
  • Commissioning and startup support
  • Configuration of programmable logic controller (PLC), distributed control system (DCS), human machine interface (HMI), and remote terminal unit (RTU) systems
  • Coordination with Alberta Electric System Operator

Project Success Criteria

The system was successfully started up and commissioned. The project successfully met all project objectives set forth in the contract. The project was delivered on time and on budget and met the client’s standards and technical requirements.
