The Challenge

The client operates an oil sands facility located in Northeast Alberta. The new technology division was looking at ways to reduce mining costs and increase production, and wanted to develop a mobile mining facility that was largely operated by an operator in a remote location. The facility included mobile conveyors, sizers, hoppers, a slurry building, and booster pump stations. The various pieces of equipment were designed and built by a variety of vendors and consultants, but had a common control system consisting of redundant ControlLogix PLCs, Honeywell servers and HMIs, and a redundant wireless Ethernet network.

Autopro's Role

Autopro was contacted to provide software design and implementation for the PLCs, as well as develop the Honeywell server database and graphics. Autopro developed software and graphic standards at the outset of the project and wrote the detailed control narratives for each piece of equipment.

Autopro’s responsibilities also included controls check out and commissioning, operations training (including writing the training manual), and startup support.

Success Criteria

The project successfully met all project objectives set forth in the contract.
