The Challenge

Autopro was contracted to provide full alarm rationalization services in a greenfield SAGD facility near Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Autopro's Role

The primary objective of the project was to provide a rationalized alarm list for the facility. This included:

  • Updating the Alarm Management Philosophy document based on discussion with client stakeholders.
  • Receiving the alarm lists from client, organizing, and loading into the master alarm database. The HAZOP references were also extracted from HAZOP reports and loaded into the database for each alarm.
  • Executing the alarm rationalization sessions for the purpose of reviewing each alarm against the Alarm Management Philosophy document.
  • Modifying the Alarm Management Philosophy based on decisions and clarifications of the client review team.
  • Completing all remaining alarms based on the direction provided by the rationalization team during the sessions. This included the reconciliation of the final alarm list with the database and loading into the master alarm database.

Success Criteria

A total of 4801 alarms were reviewed, resulting in a 37% net reduction in critical, warning, and advisory priority alarms configured.
