The Challenge

The client had installed a new flare system, including a flare knockout drum and stack, and needed an integrated control system to control and monitor the new flare and its associated controls. The primary objective of the project was to manage the emergency blowdown demands required for expansion of the process and addition of new process units at the client’s facility. The client requested that Autopro participate in the project as the main automation contractor (MAC) due to Autopro’s expertise and knowledge of the facility, its processes, and the installed Honeywell control system.

Autopro’s Role

As the MAC, Autopro executed the project following the key phases of design, including implementation and testing, site construction, commissioning, and startup. Autopro provided an integrated control system to control and monitor the new flare and associated controls. The integrated control system consisted of a Honeywell Experion distributed control system (DCS), Rockwell programmable logic controllers (PLCs), the control network infrastructure, and operator human machine interfaces (HMIs). During the design phase, Autopro generated documents and deliverables that were used to implement and test the control system. These designs were in turn used to implement a fully functional integrated control system. Autopro worked alongside the client onsite to construct the required control system and perform testing, commissioning, and startup activities.

Project Success Criteria

Autopro successfully completed all required elements of the project under budget and ahead of schedule. The project met the client’s success criteria:

  • Having an operational system online as per the overall integrated project schedule, on or before May 2019.
  • Effective operation of the integrated control system.
  • A design that minimizes long-term maintenance costs, supports the optimization of production, improves safety of personnel, protects assets, and prevents harm to the environment.
  • Safe completion of the project with no incidents, full compliance with reporting, and acting upon any near misses in adherence with client and Autopro policies.
