The Challenge

The client operates an industrial gas processing facility located in Northern Alberta. The plant was constructed and has been in operation since the late 1960s.

In November 2012, the client engaged Autopro to conduct a study of the Burner Management Systems (BMS) in use at their facility. The study concluded that 13 gas-fired units did not comply with the 2010 edition of CSA B149.3-10 code for the field approval of fuel-related components on appliances and equipment.

Autopro’s Role

During the May 2013 turnaround, Autopro installed a new BMS on the reaction furnace, and completed BMS tie-ins on the sulfreen heater and incinerator.

Following the May 2013 turnaround, the client engaged Autopro and Process Combustion Systems (PCS) to complete the BMS system installations for the Sulfreen Heater and Incinerator systems. Both upgrades have been completed.

The next phase of the project was upgrades to the Debutanizer Reboiler. The full scope of the project included:

  • Burner Replacement
  • New Combustion Air Blower for Forced Draft
  • New Fuel Gas Train
  • New Flame Scanners
  • New High Energy Spark Igniter
  • Other Mechanical Modifications
  • E&I Field Modifications
  • New BMS PLC-26 Cabinet
  • Fuel/Air Ratio Control

Autopro was responsible for:

  • Project Management of all EI&C work and managing of the PCS scope of supply
  • Detailed Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls hardware design for project scope outside of and or connecting to the BMS PLC/controller cabinets
  • Engineering scope to collect, organize and provide plant standards / installation details to facilitate PCS in providing a design and supply of equipment meeting plant standards
  • Detailing all BMS PLC controller to DCS I/O points
  • Engineering scope to coordinate PCS process/mechanical/electrical and
    controls design with the Autopro electrical, instrumentation and controls
    design
  • Engineering scope for review of PCS Vendor drawings to ensure compliance with plant standards and coordination with the Autopro electrical, instrumentation and controls design
